Laser Tattoo Removal
How does laser tattoo removal work?
Today, lasers are the mosteffective method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated laser energy, breaking the ink into tiny particles, which are then cleared away the your own immune system.
How many treatments do I need?
Most people require anywhere from 6-16 treatments. The number of treatments depends uponthe ink that was used to create the tattoo. There are no standardized inks. They all vary and may even have fluorescing agents and additives to prolong their color and intensity, requiring more treatments to effectively lighten the tattoo. However, amateur tattoos are easier to remove than professional ones and require fewer treatments.
Is there any risk of scarring?
Scarring is minimal, sometimes non-existent, but this can vary depending upon many factors.
How expensive are the treatments?
Depending on your tattoo, you may need anywhere from 6-16 sessions. Treatment costs starts at $250 each and increases in pricewith tattoo size. For a definitive price, and further information call to schedule a free consultation at(713) 465-2737.

Nip/Tuck is a popular drama about two plastic surgeons that airs on the FX network. The episode that aired on September 27, 2005 depicted a character that was trying to leave his gang life behind and start over.
Dr. McNamara and Dr. Costa are shown using a laser to remove the young man’s gang tattoos. While it is true that lasers are used to break up the ink in tattoos and remove them, it is not possible to remove a tattoo in one session. Depending on the size and location of a tattoo, it may take several sessions of laser therapy to completely remove a tattoo. A consultation with a physician who specializes in tattoo removal can easily provide the answers you need.
When tattoos are being lased, they appear to be erased as the laser ablates the skin and makes the tattoo appear opaque, but only once the skin heals and usually 30 to 60 days later do you have a realistic impression of the success of the treatment. After the skin heals, it takes 1-2 months for the body to absorb the shattered pigment and the tattoo will appear lighter than it did prior to treatment.
Most tattoos (especially the simple black ink variety) can be completely resolved in 6-12 treatments. However, I have read of some MDs using true ablative lasers like (CO2 or Er:YAG) to completely ablate the tattoo. The result looks similar to an abrasion. This is the only way to get rid of a tattoo in one treatment because with this laser, you can penetrate the dermis. But, this is way too aggressive for tattoo removal and there are more risks involved.
