John Bergeron, MD was born in Galveston, Texas and graduated Valedictorian of San Marcus Baptist Academy. He attended Texas A&M University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree and completed Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Dr. Bergeron has been practicing family and occupational medicine in Houston for the past 11 years and owns a multi-specialty group practice which focus on injury care and rehabilitation. Where did Mesotherapy originate?

How does laser tattoo removal work?
Today, lasers are the most effective method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated laser energy, breaking the ink into tiny particles, which are then cleared away the your own immune system.

How many treatments do I need?

Most people require anywhere from 6-16 treatments. The number of treatments depends upon the ink that was used to create the tattoo. There are no standardized inks. They all vary and may even have fluorescing agents and additives to prolong their color and intensity, requiing more treatments to effectively lighten the tattoo. However, amateur tattoos are easier to remove than professional ones and require fewer treatments.

Dr. McNamara and Dr. Costa are shown using a laser to remove the young man’s gang tattoos. While it is true that lasers are used to break up the ink in tattoos and remove them, it is not possible to remove a tattoo in one session. Depending on the size and location of a tattoo, it may take several sessions of laser therapy to completely remove a tattoo. A consultation with a physician who specializes in tattoo removal can easily provide the answers you need.

When tattoos are being lased, they appear to be erased as the laser ablates the skin and makes the tattoo appear opaque, but only once the skin heals and usually 30 to 60 days later do you have a realistic impression of the success of the treatment. After the skin heals, it takes 1-2 months for the body to absorb the shattered pigment and the tattoo will appear lighter than it did prior to treatment.

Most tattoos (especially the simple black ink variety) can be completely resolved in 6-12 treatments. What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is the latest advance in hair reduction. At Skin & Vein Laser Center we provide the newest technology for removing unwanted hair. Only lasers that specifically target hair are used, not pulsed light devices. New technology has also enabled treating small areas like upper lips in a matter of seconds and larger areas like backs only take about 30 minutes. Lasers work by delivering energy of a specific wavelength that is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair follicle and hair root, permanently disabling the hair root.

Are the lasers treatments painful?
We use a specialized cooling system that actively cools the skin during treatment, making laser treatments more comfortable. For sensitive areas, numbing cream is also available.

How many treatments does it take to fully get rid of the hair?
After 4-6 treatments, the majority of hair will be gone and any hair that remains will be of a lighter color and finer texture. More than one treatment is needed because the pigment the laser targets is only present when hairs are in the ‘active’ stage of hair growth.

What are the different stades of hair growth?
There are 3 stages of hair growth-active, nourishing, and resting. When hair is in any stage other than the active, its roots are not producing the pigment that the laser targets, therefore these hairs will not be effectively treated. For the laser to treat these hairs successfully, the hairs must pass into the active stage. This can take 3-6 weeks to occur depending upon the area of the face or body that the hair is growing.
